A cut diamond is worth much more than a rough diamond stone that has not been cut. If a person collects diamonds for their investment value, they will frequently have them cut to increase their resale value. If a person is in possession of a rough diamond stone and want it to be used in a ring or other piece of jewelry, they will also usually contact a diamond cutter to increase its visual appeal. Brilliant cuts, which are very shiny and flashy, are the most common diamond cuts, but step cuts, emerald cuts and rose cut are also quite common and preferred by some individuals.
