How to find or choose district judges
District judges preside in courts in a certain district, whether federal, state, local, county, criminal, or civil. Federal judicial districts all have at least one courthouse; however, many have more than one. Put another way, each state has at least one judicial district. District courts in the U.S. are essentially trial courts, with cases ranging from family law to legal disputes to youth trials to murder trials. District judges may also be called magistrates, and are judicial or judiciary officers of district courts of justice. District judges, or heads of the district court systems, are placed by appointment, working their way up through the political hierarchy. Each judge must abide by certain statutes, policy procedures, and other laws. You can find district judges by looking in your local phone book or by searching online directory listings. Target your search to a federal district judge or deputy in your local or state community, whether you need a civil court or criminal court. Go online to research district judges and what they do, the differences and similarities of district courts vs. circuit courts, salary range information, courthouse locations, local listings, maps, legal news, and more. Visit a few different district courthouse websites to find out what is going on in your community, helpful links, phone directories, forms, weather and holiday policies, docket schedules, case look ups, employment opportunities, judge profiles, jury information, clerk’s office information, fees and costs, passport acceptance information, pretrial services, FAQs, immigration and naturalization services, tours, weddings, court outreach programs, and hours of operation.

District judges that are appointed by the process described in the United States Constitution may not be fired but can me impeached by the House of Representatives with an agreement from the Senate. Most District judges may stay at that position until the resign or die. Judges may work in their district as long as they do well. District Judges may be appointed by the President of the United States and then confirmed by the United States Senate in accordance with the United States Constitution. Some judges might not have to be appointed or confirmed per the United States Constitution. There may be more than 100 United States district courts.
