Many dog and cat owners find that it is a good idea to speak to their veterinarian to help them make an educated choice on what foods to feed their pets. Some veterinarians may recommend premium labels, while others may tell you that most name-brand labels of dog and cat food will meet your pet's nutritional needs. Dog and cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" must meet standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. Dog and cat food products that are substantiated to be "complete and balanced" by feeding trials will have the statement "animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that (name of product) provides complete and balanced nutrition."
