Emergency medical services and emergency surgical services can be found at many hospitals. Most hospitals have emergency rooms and some clinics have emergency rooms. Emergency rooms are able to treat a variety of medical emergencies including acute illness, trauma, and things like heart attacks. Some emergency rooms are better equipped to handle certain emergencies than others. If emergency personnel at an emergency room realize the patient can be better treated at another facility, they will have the patient transferred to that facility. Some hospitals have trauma units that specialize in treating people with traumatic injuries. Some hospitals have emergency surgery services and those that do not will transport patients to hospitals that do when necessary. People should only go to the emergency room when there is a true medical emergency. If someone needs to see a doctor but does not have one or if they are away from home, there are medical clinics that accept walk-in patients.
