Espresso, a concentrated coffee beverage that is brewed with forced steam or hot water, is usually served in shot glass sizes and has a thicker consistency than regular coffee. It was created in Italy back in the early 20th century and has come a long way since then. More and more espresso bars and cafes are opening up to satisfy customers’ cravings for rich, thick, strong coffee, packed full of caffeine. Baristas are the professionals who brew and serve espresso and other beverages such as cappuccino. Espresso bars are small shops that sell a variety of espresso, coffees, teas, bakery items, and other beverages on the menu. They typically feature seating areas with tables and chairs, inviting people to sit down, chat, and stay awhile. Some espresso bars and coffee houses have a pretty good nightlife crowd as well, offering karaoke or local singers for entertainment. Espresso bars may sell a variety of Italian espresso, coffee, tea, cappuccino, hot cocoa, chocolate, drinks, biscotti, muffins, low fat items, water, iced tea, and baked goods. Types of espresso may vary and can include espresso brew, Italian roast, house roast, fresh roast, gourmet blend, decaf, spice, and whole bean. You can choose from a variety of condiments as well, including honey, sugar, milk, cream, sugar substitutes, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Some specialty espresso bars and shops may even sell commercial supplies and commercial equipment, such as espresso machines, grinder machines, filters, recipe books, and other products. Whichever brew you’re into, espresso bars are the place for you. Espresso bars and shops can provide social outlets for coffee drinkers, giving them a place to go to socialize and hang out.
