When you contact the greeting card retailer ask them how long they have been in business. Retailers with several years of experience often have a wider variety of traditional and funny cards that you can choose from for gifts. Ask them if they have the types of greeting cards and invitations that you need. Greeting cards are commonly themed for birthday, Christmas, anniversary, and expressing love or friendship. You might also be able to find a Christmas themed card for a baby or kids as well as wishes for adult friends and relatives. Ask the company if they have custom greeting cards as well. Custom greeting cards can give you the opportunity to put a spin on classic cards. Ask the retailer if they have boxed print cards that contain several cards so that you can have them handy when you need them. While greeting cards are traditionally sent through post, there are also digital animated e-cards that can be sent via email. When you contact the company, ask them if they have access to e-cards as well as print holiday cards. Be sure to pay close attention to the level of courtesy that the retailer’s customer service reps use when they are answering your questions. This is often a good way to determine how much they really value their customers.

While humans have been conveying their emotions to one another via written messages throughout the ages, the first known greeting card was sent over 150 years ago in Britain by Henry Cole, a civil servant who had copies of his hand-painted Christmas scene lithographed. He sent these greeting cards to co-workers, friends, and relatives to celebrate the occasion, marking the beginnings of a multi-billion dollar retail industry that today generates greeting card sales of over three billion dollars annually. The United States leads the world in retail greeting card sales, with Americans sending an average of 25 retail greeting cards per year, and receiving an average of 27 – and this doesn't even include Christmas cards, which are a major segment of the retail greeting card industry.
