Health maintenance organizations or HMOs are a kind of managed health care organization. HMOs have participating health care providers and physicians that people who are covered by the HMO must see in order to be covered. HMOs also have participating specialists and people covered by the health maintenance organization must see these specialists if they are to be covered for the care they get. Some health maintenance organizations specialize in working with larger employers while others tend to work with smaller employers. Some health maintenance organizations have many more participating physicians and participating specialists than other HMOs do. Some health maintenance organizations are staff model HMOs while others are group model HMOs or network model HMOs.
