Large orphanages are largely a thing of the past in the United States as are the large state children's homes where wards of the state were cared for in bygone eras. In this day and age children's homes are largely places where special needs children can live and can get the constant care that they require from professionals. Different children's homes cater to different kinds of special needs kids. Some children's homes are run by the state and are correctional institutions where youths that have gotten into serious trouble with the law are sent. These homes are often called state boy's homes, state girl's homes or juvenile halls. Some children's homes are places where troubled youth can stay for a short period of time or where wards of the state can stay for a short time while foster care is found.
