How to find or choose hostels
Hostels offer accommodation for students, youth, travelers, and others in need of a permanent or temporary cheap, clean place to stay. Many young people on vacation or backpacking through a country will choose to stay at a hostel as a low cost way to travel. Hostels charge small rental fees, and will sometimes allow residents to work off their fee by working around the hostel. Hostels can provide lodging for international travelers as well, providing accommodation for those who don't know their way around very well. If you're planning a trip and would like to stay in a hostel, do your research beforehand and get contact information for youth or other hostels in the area. Be sure to make a reservation beforehand, especially for a large group. Inquire about a cheap discount rate and compare the rates against other lodging entities, such as a continental bed and breakfast, hotel, motel, apartment, guesthouse, resort or cabin. If you're traveling as part of a tour group, your travel agent will be able to tell you where the hostels are in your area of travel, whether you're taking an international vacation, backpacking across the country, or taking a school youth trip. You can find hostels by looking in your local phone book or by searching online directory listings. Go online to get review summaries of hostels, locations, rental rates, photos, room reservations, planning tips, discount rates, travel warnings, and vacation ideas. There are a few hostel directories out there that list hostels all over the country and internationally. They offer reviews and rates, so take advantage.

Hostels and youth hostels cater to younger travelers, backpackers and international travelers. Hostels offer inexpensive and social lodging accommodations for travelers. Some hostels do not allow patrons of over 35 years of age. Most hostels have dormitory-like rooms with anywhere from four to 20 beds. Most hostels have shared bathroom facilities. Some hostels have restaurants and bars. Most hostels have common rooms and kitchens where patrons can fix their own food. Hostels are much more popular in Europe and other parts of the world than they are in the United States where they are mostly found in large cities and resort towns popular with young people. Some hostels have private and double rooms.
