--Types of Housing Assistance-- Housing assistance can take several different forms. Some charitable organizations and foundations focus on helping people who have a need to find affordable housing, either for individuals or families. Others work to improve housing conditions for the poor, perhaps with an emphasis on the rural poor, the urban poor, or specific high-need groups such as Native Americans or farm workers. The federal government offers a number of housing assistance programs through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). For example, public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high rise apartments for elderly families. Other organizations' missions are to purchase and renovate buildings to expand the inventory of affordable housing in a particular region. Such organizations can offer other services beyond just housing assistance. They can provide assistance to individuals to purchase properties that are in need of renovation; they can assist homeowners whose homes will benefit from renovation; they can also advise homeowners on how to maintain their homes. --How to Apply for Housing Assistance-- There are a number of steps you must take to apply for housing assistance. First, call for an appointment. Ask whether you will need to bring in any information or documentation such as pay stubs or benefits statements. Go in and fill out an assistance application. You'll be required to answer questions about who will be living with you, your income and any special needs. Ask the office or organization to provide a list of affordable housing properties in your area. Contact the landlords or managers of these properties to arrange a walk-through. -- There are a number of options available when someone needs assistance in finding housing.
