Wintertime can be uncomfortable for people, even inside a nice warm building, due to low humidity. Dry climates can cause the same effect. People need a certain level of humidity for basic comfort. In the winter, indoor humidity can be extremely low and the lack of humidity can dry out your skin and mucous membranes. Low humidity also makes the air feel colder than it actually is. Homes also can be damaged by low humidity, as dry air can dry out the wood in the walls and floors of houses. As the drying wood shrinks, it can cause creaks in floors and cracks in drywall and plaster. A humidifier can solve these problems. Humidifiers are household appliances that increase humidity (moisture) in a room.
