How to Choose Insecticides
--Types of Insecticides--
There are various types and classes of insecticides, which can be categorized by their source, how the work, and the types of pests they are designed for. Systemic insecticides are incorporated by treated plants. Insects ingest the insecticide while feeding on the plants. Contact insecticides are toxic to insects brought into direct contact. They most often applied through aerosol distribution. Natural insecticides, such as nicotine and pyrethrum, are made by plants as defenses against insects. Inorganic insecticides are manufactured with metals and include arsenates copper- and fluorine compounds, which are now seldom used, and sulfur, which is commonly used. Organic insecticides are synthetic chemicals which comprise the largest numbers of pesticides available for use today. Another way of classifying insecticides is by their mode of action, or how the pesticide kills or inactivates a pest. Mode of action is important in predicting whether an insecticide will be toxic to unrelated species such as fish, birds and mammals.
--How to Use Insecticides--
Household insecticide used for killing insects and spiders usually comes in an aerosol can, and is sprayed into the air or a nest as a means of killing the animal. Fly sprays will kill house flies, blowflies, ants, cockroaches and other insects and also spiders. Other preparations are granules or liquids that are formulated with bait that is eaten by insects. For many household pests bait traps are available that contain the pesticide and either pheromone or food baits. Crack and crevice sprays are applied into and around openings in houses such as baseboards and plumbing. Pesticides to control termites are often injected into and around the foundations of homes. Insecticide sprays should be used in well ventilated areas only, as the chemicals contained in the aerosol and most insecticides can be harmful or deadly to humans and companion animals. All insecticide products including solids, baits and bait traps should be applied such that they are out of reach of wildlife, pets and children.

Chemicals that are used to kill insects, spiders and other pesky critters are called insecticides. Insecticides are made by insecticide manufacturers and by manufacturers of insecticides. Some insecticide makers specialize in making agricultural insecticides while others specialize in making residential insecticides. Some insecticides are designed to kill insect larva while others kill adult insects. Some insecticides are designed to kill all kinds of insects and bugs while others are made to kill a certain kind of bug such as mosquito insecticides, ant insecticides, termite insecticides, wasp insecticides, locust insecticides, and cockroach insecticides. Crop dusters specialize in using agricultural insecticides to spray agricultural fields. Exterminators specialize in using residential insecticides to get ride of bugs in homes and buildings. People buy insecticides at insecticide retailers and from insecticide dealers. Exterminators, crop dusters, and insecticide retailers buy insecticides from insecticide wholesalers, insecticide distributors, and wholesale insecticide dealers.
