Karaoke is a form of entertainment that originated in Japan, and is now popular the world over. In karaoke, amateur singers sing into a microphone accompanied by recorded music. The music will be of a well-known song in which the voice of the original singer is either absent, or reduced in volume to the point where it's barely discernable. There will usually be a video display in front of the singer that scrolls the lyrics of the song, synchronized with the music, to assist the singer in getting the words right. Karaoke is more about having fun than about singing well. In fact, some people find the most entertaining aspect of karaoke shows is watching less-than-skilled singers mangle a tune in hilarious ways.
