Sanitary landfills are disposal sites for non-hazardous solid wastes. The waste is spread in layers, then compacted to the smallest practical volume, and finally covered by material applied at the end of each day. Another type of landfill is a secure chemical landfill. These are disposal sites for hazardous waste, selected and designed to minimize the chance of release of hazardous substances into the environment. All landfills must be constructed and operated in accordance with specific requirements, such as location or site requirements, stability, and protection of soil and water by utilizing liners and collection systems, storm water control, and leachate and gas management.
