Lapidaries are artisans who use a variety of techniques to carve and cut semi-precious stones and precious stones into ornaments, jewelry and decorations. Many lapidaries are independent artisans who can custom create works for customers and who sell works out of their own shops. Other lapidaries work together and sell their works to gift shops and to lapidary shops where people can buy the stone ornaments, stone jewelry and stone decorations made by the lapidaries. Some lapidaries use a variety of techniques to make their creations while others use only tumbling techniques, cabochon techniques, cutting techniques or faceting techniques to make their creations. Some lapidaries use several kinds of stone, such as onyx, jasper and marble, to make their creations while others just work with one kind of stone, such as a lapidary who only works with jade.
