The self service laundry industry in the United States is over 50 years old. The earliest washing machines were hand powered, beginning in 1797 with scrub boards; these were followed by the drum variety invented in 1851, then the rotary machine, patented in 1858. The first electric powered wringer washer was invented just after the turn of the century, and patented in 1910. These machines were initially designed for home use, until public laundry service emerged in the 1920's and 1930's, mainly as “take-in” laundry services. Automatic washers appeared in the late 1940's, with coin meters being added to the machines in the 1950's. At this point, the self service laundry concept began to take off. Today, over 30,000 self service laundries exist across America.
