Self service laundries are often referred to as Laundromats, or coin laundries. Self service laundries consist of commercial-grade, self service laundry equipment typically located in a retail space. However, retail self service laundries are only one part of the self service laundry industry; coin-operated laundry equipment is also located in residential apartment housing. This portion of the industry is also known as the coin route business, or the multi-housing laundry business. The self service laundry industry in the U.S. is approximately 60 years old, and currently consists of close to 35,000 laundry facilities, annually generating several billion dollars in gross revenue.
