The earliest washing machines were hand powered, beginning in 1797 with scrub boards. These were followed by the drum variety invented in 1851, then the rotary machine, patented in 1858. The first electric powered wringer washer was invented just after the turn of the century, and patented in 1910. Automatic washers appeared in the late 40's, with coin meters being added to the machines in the 50's. At this point, the self service laundry concept began to take off. Today, over 30,000 self service laundries exist across America. Self service laundries, along with dry cleaners, hotels, and health care facilities, often purchase their laundry equipment from wholesalers.

Various types of businesses have a need to purchase laundry equipment at wholesale prices, including hospitals and other health care facilities, hotels, and diaper and uniform services. Certainly, self service or coin operated laundries need to have a source for obtaining laundry equipment in quantity, at affordable prices. Self service laundries provide an essential health service for millions of Americans. Many people either do not own their own laundry equipment, or live in residential facilities such as apartments which do not provide the necessary utilities to connect privately owned laundry equipment. Clean clothes are a necessity of life, and self service laundries offer an easy, affordable and convenient way for residents to keep their clothing and household laundry clean and sanitary.
