Libraries
Many people are unaware of all of the research services and resources that a public city or school library can offer them. Many of today’s public main and branch libraries not only give people book lending services, but also have online catalogs and networks that allow you to perform research from your own home. The Internet has made it possible for community libraries to give their patrons access to many more services than they used to have. For instance, some city schools give their students access to digital newspapers, information about presidential candidates, virtual classrooms, reference material, and help desk services. While using the Internet is a good option, you might still need to visit your local community library for some services. For instance, printing and copying machines are often available so that you can make copies of newspapers, books, and magazines at the central branch. Some local library systems also give you the option to request materials from other branches so that you can get them more conveniently. If you do not have a computer in your home, then you might be able to visit your local school’s library to access the Internet and get electronic information. Most libraries offer these services free of charge, but private libraries might require a membership fee. If you are checking out a book, be sure to ask them if they charge fines for overdue books and get the date that you need to return them so that you do not have to pay anything for keeping them too long.
