A retail liquor store is a type of convenience store which specializes in the sale of liquor, wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages. While many states sell liquors and alcohol in such retail outlets as grocery stores and convenience markets, some states have regulations concerning the sale of liquors that are particularly strict and do not allow for the sale of liquor at any retail store other than those that specialize in liquor sales. This is especially prevalent in states on the East Coast, such as Massachusetts. Some states such as Virginia and Vermont allow for the sale of beer and wine at supermarkets and convenience stores, but limit hard liquor sales to state-operated liquor stores.
