Farmers, ranchers and producers are often too buys with other aspects of the agriculture industry to go to livestock sales in order to buy livestock. In such circumstances farmers, ranchers and producers often hire livestock buyers to go to livestock sales and auctions to buy livestock for them. Different livestock buyers specialize in buying different livestock. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying feeder cattle while others specialize in buying dairy cows. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying hogs while others specialize in buying sheep or goats. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying more exotic livestock such as buffalo, ostrich and llamas. Some livestock buyers work for stockyards and meatpackers but most are contractors who work primarily for farmers, ranchers and producers.
