While the vast majority of mattresses sold in the US are innerspring mattresses, other mattress types include air, water, and foam. Increasingly popular are mattresses made with various foam materials such as latex foam, visco-elastic foam and other polyurethane type foam but without metal spring units. Mattresses filled with water, also called waterbeds, went through a period of heavy popularity in the 70's and 80's, but have since fallen out of favor with consumers. A mattress should be replaced after about 7 to 15 years of use, although many people use their mattresses for many more years. After that much use a mattress may still be comfortable, but will no longer feel the way it did when first purchased.
