Gardeners and farmers often put down a layer of mulch over topsoil to help crops grow and to protect the soil against insects and weather. Gardeners and farmers often buy mulch from mulch retailers or mulch dealers. There are two main kinds of mulch: organic mulch and inorganic mulch. Organic mulch may be made of materials such as grass clippings, leaves, hay, straw, sawdust, wood chips, shredded newspaper, cardboard or wool. Inorganic mulch may be made of thin plastic sheeting, biodegradable plastic sheets or rocks. Some mulch dealers specialize in inorganic mulch and some specialize in organic mulch. The right type of mulch for a garden depends on the climate, the soil and what crops are being grown.
