When planning a party or function like a bar mitzvah, wedding, or corporate party, you might want to include live entertainment or music for the partygoers to enjoy. In order to get the act that is best for your function, though, you will need to know what questions to ask. First, you should decide what type of live entertainment you want. For a bar mitzvah or wedding, you might want to choose a quartet or classical ensemble. If you're planning a birthday party you might want a rock and roll band. Corporate functions can often use a variety of musical groups depending on the personality of the company. You might also want to choose comedy groups for your special occasion. Call an agency and ask about booking the live entertainment that you want for you function. Ask them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of experience will often have the connections to give you more entertainment options and services. You should also ask if they have any professional affiliations with venues, music clubs, and other booking agents. If you are hiring a musical group for you function, then you should ask to hear an audio or video recording of the group. Some talent companies will put audio and video online so that it is easy for clients to browse the different talents that they have. Ask the companies if they have party organizers who can help you plan the function. You should also ask if you need to rent the sound and production equipment for the group or if they provide their own. Many band formers will have access to this entertainment equipment, but you should always be certain or your parties could lose the group at the last minute.

When planning music and live entertainment for your function, first consider what type of music would be appropriate. Live bands are great for formal weddings and bar mitzvahs, for instance. Target bands that have experience in those types of functions and get references. Check out any videos of prior performances as well to get a feel for the band and its style. Most DJs, vocalists, instrumentalists, and live bands will have a promotional packet for you to review before hiring them. This will include the musician's bio, sample song selections, photographs, equipment list and references. It's a good idea to see the band in action by stopping by a function or event the band is playing.
