The tuning and repair of musical instruments is a highly skilled craft performed by trained technicians. Most musicians wouldn't dream of performing their own repair on their sensitive and delicate instruments, relying on musical instrument repair professionals to insure that the job is done right, without damaging or impacting the structure or sound of the instrument. Musical instrument repairers may move mechanical parts or play scales to find problems. They may unscrew and remove rod pins, keys, worn cork pads, and pistons and remove soldered parts using gas torches. They repair dents in metal and wood using filling techniques or a mallet. They may also use gas torches, grinding wheels, lathes, shears, mallets, and small handtools, so they must be skilled in metalworking and woodworking.
