Nurses who are legally licensed to practice nursing are called registered nurses because they appear on the nurses' registries maintained by the licensing body that is designated by law to regulate the nursing profession. The scope of practice of registered nurses is the extent to which a registered nurse can practice and the limits of that practice. These limits are determined by a set of laws known as the Nurse Practice Act of the state or territory in which registered nurses are licensed. Each state has its own laws, rules, and regulations governing nursing care. Registered nurses are employed by physicians, attorneys, insurance companies, private industry, school districts, ambulatory surgery centers and fire departments, among others.
