Optometrists must complete a 4-year Doctor of Optometry program at a licensed, accredited optometry school. All states require that optometrists be licensed, and pass a written exam from the National Board of Examiners in Optometry as well as a national, regional or state clinical board exam. Many states also require optometrists to pass a state exam. In 2004, 17 schools and colleges of optometry offered programs accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association. Because our eyes can weaken as we grow older, the aging baby boomer generation has led to an increase in the need for vision care. This has led to employment opportunities for optometrists growing faster than the average.
