Patent searchers are individuals who research and filter information from a variety of sources about patents: about their existence, about the ability of a client to register new patents, and even to determine if a patent infringement has occurred. Searchers are asked for many types of searches; patent novelty, patent validity, and patent infringement searches are just a few. Patent searchers are usually employed by attorneys, and in general will need to learn some patent law in addition to learning search techniques. Many patent searchers have some kind of science or engineering background which helps them understand the details of various patents as they research.
