People will often hire a psychotherapist to diagnose emotional or behavioral problems and, through a variety of techniques, help them improve their mental health. Psychotherapy usually involves in-depth discussions, or sessions, between the psychotherapist and the client in which mental and behavioral issues are discussed. Psychoanalysis is the process by which a psychotherapist can identify problems stemming from the unconscious, or repressed, desires of their client. Because psychotherapy is restricted to conversations, psychotherapists do not have to be medically qualified, although most countries require them to be trained, certified and licensed.
