The public relations industry focuses on the means and execution of influencing public opinion with regards to an individual, an organization, or an company's products or services. Public relations is different from the advertising industry as it is generally not aimed at selling products or services, but rather, influencing the opinion of the public to be favorable towards their clients, or the products or services they produce. Public relations counselors serve the public interest by acting as responsible advocates for those they represent. They can provide a voice in the marketplace of ideas, facts, and viewpoints to aid informed public debate.
