Radiotherapy (often called radiation therapy) and chemotherapy are the most commonly used treatments for cancers, along with surgical removal of cancerous tumors when possible (breast and uterine cancer, for example). Patients may choose to use hormone therapy and/or plastic surgery to repair damaged breast tissue and lead a normal post-illness life. Cancer vaccines and chemotherapy drugs (including those that attack tumors and immunotherapy drugs to strengthen the immune system) have been developed to prevent and treat cancers related to hepatitis B and cervical cancer, after advanced clinical trials. Radiotherapy targets very specific cancerous tissue anywhere in the body, from the brain on down, irradiating the area with gamma or proton particles to stop cancerous growth. New cancer treatments are being developed every day, in the U.S. and abroad, giving cancer victims better odds for a healthy future.
