Railroad ties can be an excellent solution to a variety of landscaping challenges. While they are perfect for many applications, they work particularly well for retaining walls, raised beds and to line driveways and wide walkways. Railroad ties are cut from either western red cedar, or pressure treated southern yellow pine. They can be purchased in random 18" to 24" lengths, or cut to a specific length. They are rough sawed, so they might have edge burrs from sawing. When working with railroad ties, one should be aware that no two are the same. Also, the average 8.5 ft railroad tie weighs approximately 100 lbs., so you must plan accordingly if you are to pick them up yourself.

Using railroad ties in your landscaping project can add a rural, natural look. Railroad ties are used by landscape contractors as a main design component of landscaping for both homes and businesses. They can be an inexpensive option when compared to brick and block structures. One of the greatest things about railroad ties is the ease with which they can be used. It requires much less skill to construct a retaining wall of railroad ties than one of block. And, you don't have to be overly concerned about perfectly straight lines. They can be stacked horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or staggered front to back or top to bottom. They can border lawns as a mowing strip or set off ground cover from gravel beds.
