There are four primary classifications of railroad ties that can be used for landscaping purposes. The highest quality class is landscape relay, which have four good, solid sides, usually exhibiting only minor imperfections. The next lower type, landscape #1 ties are an excellent tie for a variety of landscape uses, with a minimum of three solid sides. Moderate imperfections may exist, but typically compliment the nature and rustic beauty of the tie. Landscape #2 ties are good quality for many landscape uses, with at least two good solid sides. They may have some rot, plate cutting, and end splitting. Landscape #3 railroad ties are of fair to poor quality, and have at least one good side, most likely exhibiting rot, plate cutting and end splitting.
