A ranch is a large tract of land that is used for agricultural purposes. Most ranches are dedicated to the raising of livestock. On some ranches the ranchers go crops but these crops are often only used as feed for the livestock. On horse ranches horses are raised. On cattle ranches cows are raised. Cattle ranches tend to use their cows for meat instead of for dairy. On sheep ranches sheep are raised. Some ranches are dedicated to the raising of non-traditional livestock like bison, ostrich and elk. Some ranches are no longer used to raise livestock. These non-producing ranches are sometimes turned into tourist destinations called dude ranches.
