Some record companies own several different record labels that each put out a specific genre of music. Record companies record, promote and distribute the work of artists they sign. Usually record companies approach the artists they would like to sign to a contract. Sometimes artists send demos into record companies they would like to sign with. Record companies promote artists through media like radio, the Web, television and in print. Larger and major record companies and labels tend to have more promotional reach than do smaller and independent record companies.
