How to find or choose retirement communities & homes
Retirement communities & homes refer to housing for retirees and senior citizens who no longer work or who can’t live alone any longer due to medical or physical issues. Retirement communities typically feature common areas for meals, amenities, socialization, activity, and recreation, such as clubhouses, pools, golf courses, arts and crafts, boating, walking paths, and gardens. They usually also offer an on-site medical facility to tend to elderly in need, as many of the residents take several medications or are in need of constant medical supervision or treatment. Retirement communities sometimes differ from nursing and convalescent homes which can include health and wellness clinics, senior housing, hospice, or group homes where adults suffering from a disability such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s can receive personal elderly care services, medical care and nursing care. Retirement communities, however, are typically occupied by people over a certain age who don’t want to mow their lawns or shovel snow anymore. Senior citizens pay a good amount of money to live in such a community, where there are no young children, and where they can eat, sleep, socialize, and get medical care all in one place. In traditional nursing homes and senior housing facilities, adults who cannot care for themselves are guaranteed a level of attention and safety by professional care givers and nurses, who provide recreation programs, meals, classes, games, and personal assistance for individuals. Independent nursing homes have a higher level of independent recreation, whereby nursing staff members visit on a regular basis. A nursing home facility or retirement community can take the form of an apartment, assisted living complex, condominium, townhouse, village, or large group home. Retirement homes and communities offer many possibilities for those facing retirement. A retiree who wants to remain active may find a retirement community or home that can provide them with a full schedule of sports, including golf and tennis. If the retiree chooses to retain their independence, they can find a retirement home in which they can live alone but enjoy privileges provided by the retirement home. Some retirement homes have medical care facilities, hair salons, and stores.
