Rheumatology, the study of disorders affecting the bones, joints and muscles, is a growing field in the U.S., particularly because our population is aging. One common development of aging is osteoarthritis, or the breakdown of connective tissue in movement-intensive areas of the body such as the hands, knees, elbows and shoulders. Other forms of arthritis include juvenile (a pediatric disorder), ankylosing spondylitis (affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints), and polyarthritis (arthritis in several joints at once). Bursitis, the inflammation of pockets of fluid, occurs most commonly in the shoulder, elbow and knee joints; gout is another common rheumatoid disease, in which uric acid is overproduced and deposited on cartilage around the joints, causing stiffness and pain. Rheumatoid disorders maybe treated with steroid drugs such as cortisone, as well as pain management drugs. Using these treatments and others currently in development, rheumatologists are finding new ways for victims to lead normal, pain-free lives.
