How to Choose Sailmakers
--Types of Sails--
There are many different types of sails, categorized by type of boat they are used on, and by the particular use of the sail. Sails categorized based on the type of boat include cruising sails, racing sails, traditional sails, and historical sails. Cruising sails can be standard or offshore quality cruising sails. These are the highest quality sails, intended for the offshore cruiser or dedicated coastal passage maker where extensive hard use and adverse conditions prevail. They include additional reinforcement in the corners and anti-chafe protection where needed. Racing sails are designed and constructed with fast shapes that have superior performance in a wide range of wind and sea conditions. This is often done by using advanced techniques in computer aided design and computer plotting of the panels and a background in fluid dynamics. Traditional sails can be made in a variety of styles, including gaff, gaff topsails, lug, sprite, miter or scotch cut jibs, to name a few. Sailmakers also make historical reproduction sails for historical boats, such as square and trapezoidal sails, staysails, square sprite sails and the like, often made to the specifications of the vessels period in history. Sails categorized based on their function include mainsails, foresails, jibs, storm jibs, and spinnakers. Sailmakers make spinnakers in several different styles, including horizontal cut, radial head cut, and tri-radial cut spinnakers.
--Sailmakers are professionals who can make a wide range of sails for sailboats of all different types. The Internet can help you find sailmakers in your area.

Sails may be planned for cruising and racing. Sailmakers may be capable of designing sails for sailors from around the world. Sails might be engineered for every boat that calls for a sail or sails. Sailmakers may look at carefully and examine each boat or ship that involves a sail. Based on sailmaker's study through trained engineers, sails may be designed and designed to the specifications of the engineer's blueprint. Sailmakers who are a sailor may be the best sailmakers to employ because they understand the experience of being on a boat with a well-designed sail that fits the ship like a glove.
