Scaffolding and aerial lifts are used to raise, lower and support workers and their materials, typically during structure construction and/or maintenance. Both scaffolding and aerial lifts perform the same ultimate function, which is to afford workers access to areas above ground that are inaccessible via other means, such as ladders. Scaffolding typically is constructed as a sturdy framework of metal pipes with a solid platform and is either erected on a firm surface, or is lowered by a system of ropes and pulleys from a building roof. Aerial lifts are devices that raise personnel and materials from the surface via a motor. An example of an aerial lift is the basket that you sometimes see used by firefighters to reach a building's occupants on upper floors.
