Septic tanks are concrete or steel containers buried underground near homes and buildings. Sewage flows into a septic tank from the home or building. Solids in the sewage stay in the tank, while the liquid effluent flows from the tank into a leaching field that allows the material to be gradually absorbed into the surrounding soil, where bacteria destroys the organic compounds. Within the tank itself, bacteria contained in the sewage digest the solids, changing most of the waste into gas and harmless humus. While the gas escapes into the air, the humus must be pumped out periodically. If you need to have a septic tank system designed, built, installed, pumped or serviced, septic tank dealers, designers and contractors can do the work for you.
