In decades past, most gasoline and oil service stations offered full service, in which an attendant operated the pump, checked the vehicle's oil, and even squeegeed the windshield. It is a Norman Rockwell type of memory for many, to recall the cheery gas station attendants of the past who considered it their duty to insure all motorists were sent on their way with a full tank, clean windshield and checked engine. Nowadays not all gasoline service stations offer full service – in fact, many are strictly self-service, in which the customer pumps the gas. Some gasoline service stations do offer a choice to have the attendant pump the gas, although they typically charge more that service.
