There are three main types of hot tubs: wooden soaking tubs, plastic spas (also known as whirlpools), and bathtub-sized indoor units. Wooden hot tubs are constructed similar to a barrel with wooden staves, and lined with benches inside. These hot tubs do not circulate or bubble the water the way spas do, other than slight circulation for the purposes of heating and filtering. Spas are usually made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic formed into shapes that include a seating arrangement. Spas have hydrotherapy jets, often aerated for a bubbling effect, that direct a forceful flow of water at various parts of the body. Bathtub spas resemble conventional bathtubs, don't contain any heating or filtration mechanisms, and usually contain just one or two hydrotherapy water jets.
