Throughout history tattooing and body piercing have been practiced by many cultures. Tattooing is growing in popularity in the United States. In 1936, an estimated 6% of the American population had tattooing. In a Harris poll taken in 2003, 16% of Americans now have tattooing. Some people tattoo themselves; while other people sometimes have tattooing done by friends. People often will go to a professional tattooing artist to have body art done on them. People using a professional tattooing artist often ask about how the needles have been sterilized before starting a tattooing job on their body. Unsterile tattooing and piercing equipment and needles can spread serious infection, hepatitis, tetanus, or possibly even HIV.
