Taxidermists will usually work a variety of different animals. Many will stuff and prepare mammals, such as deer and elk, usually removing and mounting their heads onto special wooden platforms which can be hung on walls. Other taxidermist supplies can include fake eyes, which are usually put in to replace the animal's natural eyes because they do not preserve as easily. Taxidermists will sometimes use full animal mannequins if a person just wants the coat of an animal preserved, or if part of the animal is too damaged to use. Taxidermists will also use artificial rocks and other items to decorate their finish product as well.

Taxidermists are frequently contacted by hunters so their game can be preserved and posed for posterity. Taxidermists preserve the outside appearance of an animal so its original appearance remains the same. Taxidermist supplies can include anything from decorations and mounts used to show the animal, and the chemicals and tools used in the taxidermy process. Epoxies and other chemical sealants are frequently used by taxidermists, as are airbrushes and paints, which can restore damaged parts of the game to their former appearance. Sculpting clay, glass and thread are also used to help restore the appearance of a deer, elk or any other animal that a person wants preserved by using taxidermy.
