When working with telecommunications wiring and cabling, it is crucial to be familiar with the EIA/TIA-568 standard, which defines the standard for cabling and wiring used in commercial telecommunications systems. This standard specifies the pinout, or order of connections, for wires in RJ-45 8-pin modular connector plugs and jacks used with Category 3, Category 5 and Category 6 4-pair cables. The eight wires in the cable are grouped into four pairs. Each wire pair is twisted within the cable to reduce crosstalk with the other pairs. The number of twists per meter makes up part of the specification for a given type of cable. The greater the number of twists, the more crosstalk is reduced.
