Cable television or Community Antenna Television (CATV) is a system of providing television, FM radio programming and other services to consumers via radio frequency signals transmitted directly to people's homes through fixed optical fibers or coaxial cables. This is in contrast (and competition) with traditional television broadcasting, which uses over-the-air method via radio waves, requiring a television antenna to receive the signals. While there is an essential difference between cable television and CATV, the term “cable television” is sometimes used to describe both. To be precise, CATV is a system comprised of a shared community antenna connected to multiple houses via a coaxial cable, whereas cable television is a system that can include cable-only networks, satellite signals, and multiple antennas.
