Because retread tires are often much less expensive than new tires, they are often used in large scale commercial operations such as trucking, bussing and commercial aviation. Retread tire manufacturers will usually take worn or used tires and buff away the used tread. After the old tread has been removed, they will then apply new rubber tread to the tire casing using a vulcanizing process, creating a usable tire. Because of the large amounts of specialized equipment and supplies that are often needed in the retreading process, many manufacturers will choose to purchase their equipment and supplies from a wholesale dealer.
