If the people you know have good things to say about the stores they shop at and if these stores sell the types of fish and fish supplies you need, then you should visit those stores. You may also want to ask tropical fish enthusiasts you know about some of the tropical fish stores that sell the type of fish you want. These people may have good things to say about the fish store, or they may not. Once you have gotten a list of potential fish stores, pay each of these stores a visit. When at the store, note the cleanliness of the store and the cleanliness of their tanks. Also note how healthy the fish there look. If you see tanks with dead fish, maybe you should not patronize that store. You should also heed special attention to the level of customer service offered to you by those who work at the tropical fish store. Make sure they can answer all your questions. Also beware the stores that try to up-sell you to larger aquariums or more expensive fish at every turn. Good tropical fish stores have workers who know their and are unafraid to share their knowledge. Bad tropical fish stores have workers who ignore their customers, give incomplete answers to customer questions, and are only concerned with up-selling.
