Vending machines generally serve the purpose of selling snacks and beverages, but are also commonly found in busy locations selling other merchandise, such as newspapers. Cigarettes used to be sold in the U.S. through vending machines, but this practice is increasingly rare due to concerns about underage buyers. Oddly, during the 1950s, life insurance policies were sold through vending machines at airports, but this practice disappeared due to the tendency of American courts to strictly construe such policies against their sellers. Vending machines can be a very profitable form of trade, as the merchandise for vending machines can be purchased at a very low bulk rate, and sold via the vending machine for a significant profit.
