How to Choose Vineyards
--Types of Vineyards-- There are three primary categories of vineyards: Those for growing grapes for winemaking, those for growing grapes for raisins, and those for growing grapes for eating and/or other food products such as grape juice. Vineyards used for producing wine grapes are most commonly visited. This is especially true of vineyards that have wine making facilities, tasting rooms, and restaurants. These types of vineyards often are terrific tourist draws, and they will often provide a wonderful experience to wine lovers. There are many different types of vineyard tasting facilities. Some vineyards have little more than a booth where visitors can casually sip the wines produced there. Others have lovely buildings in a country-like setting, and offer organized tours of their wine making operations. Some offer food for their visitors, ranging from snacks to casual cafés to elegant formal restaurants. At some vineyards you can find complete party facilities where large groups and even weddings can be accommodated. --What to Look For at Vineyards-- There is a combination of natural factors associated with any particular vineyard that dramatically impact the quality of the grapes produced. These factors include such things as soil, underlying rock, altitude, slope of hill or terrain, orientation toward the sun, and microclimate (typical rain, winds, humidity, temperature variations, etc.) No two vineyards are exactly the same. Vineyards are often on hillsides and on soil of marginal value to other plants. Some wine makers believe that "the worse the soil, the better the wine." Planting on hillsides, especially facing south, is most often in an attempt to maximize the amount of sunlight that falls on the vineyard. For this reason some of the best wines come from vineyards planted on quite steep hills, conditions which would make most other agricultural products uneconomic. --Vineyards are the places where our grapes are grown for wine making and for eating. A vineyard is a very specific kind of farm that only grows grapes. Most vineyards grow grapes that are used to make wine. A few wine growers grow grapes that are sold in the produce department of supermarkets while a few others grow grapes made in brandy or fortified wines. Many vineyards are attached to wineries where the juices from the grapes are turned into wine. Vineyards with wineries tend to produce their own labels of wine. Some vineyards sell their grapes to large winemakers. The soils and climate found at a vineyard largely determine what kinds of grapes will be grown there. Different soil types and climates are conducive for growing different kinds of grapes. Some vineyards grow several types of grapes while others just grow one. Some vineyards grow chardonnay grapes while others may grow pinot noir grapes, cabernet sauvignon grapes, merlot grapes, cabernet franc grapes, Shiraz grapes, or zinfandel grapes.
